Construction and components of the motors The digital MDD AC servo motors are permanent magnet-excited synchronous motors with electronic commutation. The permanent magnets of the rotor are made of rare-earth or iron oxide magnetic materials. The use of such materials makes it possible to construct a motor with low inertia. Figure 1.2 depicts the principle of construction and the components of the MDD AC servo motor. Fig. 1.2: The construction of an MDD AC servo motor Operating reliability The high degree of operating reliability is the result of the following constructional features of MDD motors: • Maintenance-free operation as a result of: - a brushless design of the motor and - the use of life-time lubricated bearings. • Can be used directly within the working area of the machine even under poor environmental conditions (e.g., affects of coolants or soluble oil emulsions): - because the motor housing is completely sealed and - the connections for the motor power cable and the feedback cable are constructed as per protection category IP 65. • Motor temperature monitoring by means of a temperature sensor built into the motor windings prevents overload damage.
